I. The Western Framework

In The Work of Art: Immanence and Transcendence (1997), the literary critic Gérard Genette proposes a reconsideration of the conditions or forms in which works of art exist or manifest themselves. It is an inquiry into material conventions, as well as into the very definition of the artistic object.

Our thinking about the work of art is crucially shaped by the place assigned to it in Western modernity: the unique, closed work, made by an author and legally protected as a scarce commodity.

II. Papers from the East

Although it might seem otherwise, this exhibition by Marek Wolfryd, an installment in the ongoing series The Infinite Path, does not enter into the specific debates of that modern grand narrative. Instead, it proposes a precise addition that places it in perspective as a broad cultural construction.

The South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han’s text The Art of Forgery and Deconstruction in Chinese (2011) is key to this inquiry.
